Flours made from taro, cassava, breadfruit and plantain are still relatively novel in the New Zealand market but are starting to gain attention

Moringa, often referred to as the “Miracle Tree,” is renowned for its nutrient-rich profile, encompassing vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids. Its leaves, powder, and oil are utilised in various applications, including dietary supplements, functional foods, and skin care products, owing to their health benefits, such as immune support and anti-inflammatory properties.

Noni, a traditional Polynesian fruit, is valued for its potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Often called a superfood, it is sold as juice, powder, or capsules to healthconscious consumers worldwide. A single acre with 290 plants of healthy well maintained Noni trees can produce up to 31 tons of fruit.

Functional foods, which are everyday foods and beverages enhanced with additional health benefits beyond essential nutrition, are becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand. Claims made by functional foods, such as reducing the risk of certain conditions, must be backed by scientific evidence and comply with specific nutritional content requirements. For instance, a product claiming to reduce osteoporosis risk must contain a scientifically supported amount of calcium. Shelves in New Zealand supermarkets are filled with functional foods, including breakfast cereals fortified with vitamins, gluten-free bread and biscuits, immunity-boosting teas and beverages, or yoghurts with probiotics. Innovations continue with ingredients like Turmeric, Moringa and Noni, offering new health benefits and unique selling propositions.

Spices such as ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and chilli pepper are witnessing growing demand in New Zealand , driven by their dual roles as flavour enhancers and functional foods. Over the last four years, the demand for these spices has seen a steady increase of 20% overall. Spices in functional drinks, immunity-boosting shots, and ready-to-use blends have surged, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, as consumers increasingly prioritise health benefits alongside taste.
