PTI Europe: Bridging Oceans - PTI Europe’s Mission to Connect Pacific Island Businesses with European Market

Europe Office Story

PTI Europe’s Trade Commissioner, Jodie Stewart, recently undertook a key trade and investment mission to Fiji, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, marking a significant milestone in fortifying existing relationships and building new connections in the Pacific region.

This mission trip, which took place between 25th April to 6th June, provided an opportunity for PTI Europe to sustain vital relations with clients and stakeholders, while simultaneously initiating dialogue with new businesses, exporters, growers, manufacturers and service providers to discuss the development of trade and investment in the region.

Over the duration of the mission, Stewart engaged with various local organisations including PHAMA Plus and The Pacific Community (SPC), working to understand their current activities and beneficiaries, while also exploring possible synergies with PTI’s priorities.  A notable focus was on agricultural and food products, in particular the growing interest from Europe in specialty cocoa and coffee.

“The recent journey to Fiji, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea was enlightening. I was deeply impressed by the tenacity and resilience of these Pacific Islands businesses, as well as the distinct quality and uniqueness of their products. Much of Europe is yet to uncover these Pacific gems, and I am excited about the tremendous potential these have within the European market,” Stewart remarked.

The potential of the tourism and hospitality industry was also apparent during Stewart’s visit. With pristine beaches, stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, the Pacific Islands provide an alluring destination for European travellers seeking unique and authentic experiences. Capitalising on this, some local businesses have started offering specialised services and products catering specifically to European visitors.

Reflecting on her journey, Stewart shared, “There’s something incredibly authentic about the Pacific Islands – it’s part of their DNA. From the moment I set foot on these islands, I felt an undeniable warmth and genuineness you can’t manufacture. Whether it was a kindly offered flower to brighten my day, or engaging discussions with inspirational business owners, their sincerity and candour was refreshing. And it is this authenticity that distinguishes the Pacific Islands, making each visit a truly unique experience.”

Despite the considerable challenges Pacific businesses often face when exporting to Europe, many have managed to identify and leverage opportunities in various sectors, embracing their unique products, various eCommerce platforms and European certification standards. Stewart commended their tenacity and achievements: “Your businesses stand tall with your accomplishments, and it’s my privilege to facilitate your journey into the European market.”

Bolstered by the success of the recent mission, PTI Europe looks forward to further strengthening its ties with Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, while continuing to support the development of the Blue Pacific region, building on the foundations laid during this visit and working hand-in-hand with local partners to create a prosperous future for all.
