Nestled amid turquoise waters and lush landscapes, the Blue Pacific epitomises a serene paradise. Yet, in the global sporting arena, this region transforms into a formidable force, echoing with determination and spirit.
The pride and prowess of Pacific athletes are unmistakable. They prove, time and again, that being from remote islands and smaller populations doesn’t hinder, but rather fuels their passion, resilience and teamwork. In sports such as rugby union, rugby league and netball they emerge as formidable figures, breaking barriers and redefining excellence.
Over the past year, witnessing our Pacific teams’ triumphs has been a journey of anticipation, awe and pride. Their agility, strength and collaborative spirit not only thrill spectators, but also resonate deeply with me. It prompts a reflection: what can we, in the business world, learn from these remarkable Pacific sportspeople?
Sport is deeply intertwined with Pacific culture, where the journey often begins in childhood. A rugby ball, volleyball or soccer ball is more than just equipment; it’s a symbol of connection and shared dreams. Whether on a beach or a grassy field, every pass reinforces a strong cultural bond. We see this shared sense of togetherness in action every time the Fijian Drua perform a cibi, or the Toa Samoa, the siva tau.
Fijian Drua Head Coach, Mick Byrne, attributes their success to this ingrained cultural identity. He contrasts this with other teams where identity is developed, whereas in Fiji, it’s a natural extension of their heritage. He says, “There are a lot of teams I’ve worked with over the years, where … you try and find your identity and build that as a team, whereas [in Fiji] their identity and culture is ingrained in them. It was just a matter of helping them to understand what it means to be a professional rugby player.”
We see this mirrored in the private sector in Pacific Islands businesses. Cultural and values alignment leads to great teamwork which, in turn, lead to delivering superior products and services. Great teams are what makes companies stand out from competition and produce the best results.
Pacific athletes exemplify a perfect blend of respect for their cultural roots and a relentless drive for excellence. Our athletes embody a unique formula: a deep understanding and honour of tradition combined with a fierce ambition to succeed. This balance is meticulously maintained, both in competition and in life. Participating in top-tier teams around the world, these athletes remain closely tied to their rich cultural heritage. At the same time, they adapt and excel, breaking through barriers and setting new standards of achievement on the global stage.
This synergy of fierce competition and shared social values is increasingly relevant in the corporate world. As writer Robert Chestnut notes, “For decades, leaders were expected to focus on one thing: financial results. But now we are in the midst of an ethical revolution. Businesses practices are evolving, making room for more sustainable and responsible approaches.”
The past year has been a showcase of Pacific excellence: the Flying Fijians’ historic Rugby World Cup triumph over the Australian Wallabies; Papua New Guinea and Australia’s Mary Fowler leading the Matildas to unprecedented heights; the Tongan Tala netball team’s meteoric rise; and the inspiring performances at the South Pacific Games in Honiara. These feats aren’t just sporting victories; they also symbolise the Pacific’s collective strength and game-changing capability.
In his book Legacy, James Kerr examines the All Blacks’ sustained success, concluding that excellence in sports, business, and life transcends technique – instead, it’s a mental game. “Being the best in the world is about more than just technique … rugby, like business and like life, is a game played primarily in the mind,” says Kerr.
As we stand on the cusp of unprecedented achievements, it’s evident the Pacific region is redefining success through its unique blend of finesse, fiery spirit and unwavering unity. This fusion is reshaping not only the sporting world, but is also having a significant impact on the business sphere. Our journey, deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of Pacific culture, goes beyond striving for excellence. It stands as a powerful testament to the strength of our shared spirit and the transformative power of unity in both sports and business.
Looking ahead to 2024, the Pacific’s unique approach, characterised by passion, resilience and collaboration, is poised to drive meaningful change. This approach, mirroring our success in sports, is influencing business strategies, fostering a culture of collective achievement and sustainable progress. As we embrace new challenges and seek further triumphs, our united front and steadfast commitment prepare us to leave an enduring mark on the global stage. Our journey continues, shaping a future where the Pacific’s distinctive influence and achievements are recognised and celebrated worldwide, demonstrating the true potential of our collaborative spirit in every endeavour.
